USDA Free Meal Program Ends

Posted on: June 3, 2022

For the past two years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided waivers to Child Nutrition Programs across the United States, allowing these programs to offer all students breakfast and lunch meals at no charge, regardless of income status. This program expired on the last day of school this year for school meals.

Starting next school year (August 2022) families will need to complete a Free/Reduced Meal Application in order to receive free or reduced meals at school. Students who do not qualify for Free/Reduced Meals will need to purchase meals at school next school year.

If you think that your family qualifies or may qualify for Free/Reduced meals, even if you think you may not, it is very important to fill out an application NOW. This program is confidential.

This application will provide carryover coverage for the first 30 days of school, and upon the student’s eligibility will provide free or reduced breakfast and lunch upon the return of the new school year.

What do Parents Need to Do NOW?

  • In order to receive free or reduced meals for the first 30 days of the 2022-2023 school year, Click here to complete a 2021-22 meal application online. Additionally, if you have difficulty completing the form online, you may print out the application and mail or drop it off at the school. Once you complete the application you will be notified of your student’s eligibility. Remember, this is only for the first 30 days. This is necessary since no applications were needed for the 2021-2022 school due to the free meals provided to all students by the USDA.
  • During the month of July, the free and reduced application for the 2022-2023 School Year will be made available to us from the USDA. As soon as the application is available for next school year, we will send the information to you via email. Once the form is submitted there are no additional steps necessary unless there is an income change during the school year.
