District Schedule Changes

Posted on: April 3, 2018
The Kings Board of Education voted on Tuesday, March 20 to discontinue weekly Early Release and to add a later start time for grades 7-12 for the 2018-2019 school year. Students at the KJH and KHS Campus will begin their day next year at 7:50 a.m.  There will be no change in school end time.

The district sent out a survey in February to parents with students in grades 6-11 with questions regarding eliminating Early Release and also asking if they saw a benefit to a 30-minute later start time. The survey received 721 responses.

We asked the question, "I see a benefit for a 30-minute later start time for junior high and high school students." The survey results showed that 613 of the respondents answered neutral to strongly agree.

Research shows that a later start time for this grade level of students can be beneficial. Kings Superintendent, Tim Ackermann said, "Implementing the later start time is a significant change that positively affects their health, safety, and learning."

Additionally, our survey results showed that nearly 80% of respondents (between neutral and strongly agree) answered that the elimination of Early Release would be easier on their family schedule. The district has added two additional in-service days next school year to replace the professional development time lost from the eliminated Early Release time.

The district would like to thank those who took the time to answer the survey. "The feedback from our community is important, relevant, and helps us in making decisions for the district," said Ackermann.
