KLSD English for Speakers of Other Languages

Overview

The Kings Local School District’s ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) department continues to grow as our English Learner and Multilingual Learner populations increase.  The students currently number nearly 600. The top languages currently spoken by the students in the ESOL program are Russian and Uzbek but many other languages are represented.

Every building offers support for the ELs and MLs at their site. Services are determined based on the language proficiency levels and needs of the students. We offer sheltered English instruction at the secondary level and a variety of pull-out and inclusion services at the elementary level.  We currently employ 10 teachers to support the needs of the students in our ESOL program: 8 elementary and intermediate school teachers and 2 secondary teachers.

Service Delivery Model

Elementary and intermediate students receive ESOL services according to their language proficiency needs in a separate setting with their ESOL teachers. ESOL teachers coordinate and collaborate with General Education teachers to support classroom instruction. Junior high and high school EL and ML students also receive services according to their needs in their ESOL classes and, when appropriate, in sheltered or cohort classes that are supported or co-taught with General Education content teachers.
